What is a viral head spa?
A viral head spa is a slow scalp cleanse and massage done while you lie back at a heated basin, with warm running water, rich lather and a magnified look at your scalp on a screen. The name comes from the videos of it shared across social media. In South Pasadena, Elegant Head Spa offers it as Gold (60 minutes, $98) and ELELUX (70 minutes, $165).

Why it went viral
The videos are slow and close: water running through hair, a therapist's hands working lather into the scalp, and a camera screen showing the scalp up close. People watch them to relax, and many then want to try it for themselves. The experience in person is quieter than the videos, with your eyes covered and the sound of warm water.
What happens, step by step
- Magnified scalp check on screen, so you see what we see.
- Neck and shoulder massage to settle in.
- Pressure-point scalp massage.
- Cleansing scalp oil, then shampoo and conditioner at the warm basin.
- Steamed hair mask.
- Gentle heat on the scalp from a warming device.
- Electric comb massage with freshly sanitized tools.
- Hydrating scalp tonic to finish.
ELELUX adds aromatherapy oils, organic shampoo and conditioner, a scalp serum, LED light and a hydro-cleanse, and runs ten minutes longer.
How is it different from a salon shampoo?
A salon wash takes a few minutes and is there to prepare for a cut or colour. A head spa is the whole appointment. You lie flat on a padded bed rather than sitting at a sink, the water is temperature controlled, and most of the hour is massage. There is no cutting or colour.
Is it a treatment for hair loss?
No. A head spa is a relaxation and cleansing service, not a medical treatment, and we make no hair-growth claims. If you are worried about hair loss or a scalp condition, please see a dermatologist.
How much does a viral head spa cost?
At Elegant Head Spa, Gold Relaxation Head Spa is $98 for 60 minutes and ELELUX Head Spa is $165 for 70 minutes. A 30-minute Scalp Massage Only is $50. Pairings with massage run from $167. Most bookings take a $15 deposit on Fresha.
